Experience contemporary circus at the Pepe Dome in Munich: no animals, no variety show clichés. Discover modern acrobatics that tell real stories. Read on!
- Munich has a place where gravity meets poetry: the Pepe Dome. Under the vision of Pepe (Michael Heiduk), a space is taking shape here that breaks with outdated circus clichés. This isn’t about sensationalism at any cost, but about a modern art form that brings people together and tells stories.
No animals, no variety show: the circus as a modern form of expression
Why does Pepe consistently avoid using animals and traditional variety acts? The reason lies at the very heart of contemporary circus. Whilst the traditional circus often relies on animal training and variety shows on a loose succession of entertainment acts, Pepe sees artistry as a ‘language for the body, stories and community’ (see pepearts.de).
Here are the key differences
- People take centre stage: Instead of showcasing animals, our performers demonstrate what the human body is capable of through trust and training. For us, artistry is not merely a trick, but a ‘means of expression for the performers’ (see Manifesto of Contemporary Circus, berlin-circus-festival.de).
- Real stories: Our shows are not just a series of acts. We combine acrobatics, dance and theatre to create a total work of art. The Federal Association of Contemporary Circus (BUZZ) describes this as an ‘art of the in-between’ – a play on risk, courage and genuine emotion (see bu-zz.de).
A vibrant hub for Munich’s culture of the future
Pepe wants the circus in Germany to finally achieve the status it already enjoys in countries such as France or Canada. There, it is recognised as an art form in its own right and is supported accordingly (see Manifesto, berlin-circus-festival.de). The Pepe Dome is therefore far more than just a tent: it is a laboratory for innovation, where modern technology meets handcrafted art.
Why your support, as a sponsor or audience member, matters
- Culture for all: Our visual language needs no words. It is understood across all generations and cultures.
- Social impact: The Dome is a meeting place that brings the neighbourhood to life and connects international artists with the local community.
- Innovation: We experiment with new media and digital art to continually develop the circus.
We invite you to become part of this vision. Help us establish the Pepe Dome as a firm anchor for contemporary art in Munich. Come along, be inspired and discover just how modern the circus can really be.
